Fosi was an institution and was around for centuries in computer time.
You may not have been using a computer back when Fosi appeared on "The

O' trust me I was very computer literate as a little kid, even before
Windoze 95. In fact back then, even as a child I was in Software
trading/warez groups that mailed DOS games and software on floppy disks
to each other via Kanada Post since the local dial-up BBSes at the time
hosted mostly only textfiles. FOSI programz had some clean stuff, but
alot of it could be had by downloading shareware from legit sites and
finding a serial number.

My keyboard shorted out because of the tears I shed requiring me to pull
out the roll up silicone rubber keyboard and keep a towel handy

Fosi was an institution and was around for centuries in computer time.
You may not have been using a computer back when Fosi appeared on "The
Scene" in 1997. ^_^
I was already well into the computer scene by 1997. I was pirating programs
on my coco3. When I got my second floppy drive, I used the dski/dsko
commands to write a sector by sector disk copier routine. It let me copy
the "copy protected" floppies I'd bought at the mall. They had a bad sector
marked on them and the backup command that was built in would halt when it
saw it. Sneaky trick, but very old.. I'd seen it before on the apples at
school.

I couldn't actually mark a sector bad with those commands, so when the disk
started to read funny, you'd pop the latch up on the drive and it would see
a "bad sector" read and load up off the copy. [g]

I got creative with my disk copier and made a modified copy that would
"hide" information on a disk for you. Basically, you'd copy what you wanted
to the disk that was to be hidden, but you couldn't fill the disk up.. you
had to save atleast 60k. Then, you'd run my program. It would copy the fat
table to an empty sector at the back of the disk and replace it with a semi
clean one; the semi clean one appeared to be blank, the disc would show
blank if you dir'd it, but it knew when you copied files to it, where your
real ones were and so wouldn't accidently use one of those sectors.

You could store upto 60k of innocent looking things and you wouldn't erase
your real data.

I improved the program and you could preset how much of the disc was to be
reserved for hidden things.

Obviously there was a flaw in my program tho, because if you dir'd the
innocent looking files and paid attention to the byte sizes of the files,
you'd notice the disk had less available space for use than it should
normally have. I later modified my program again to give a false reading
there; but you had to be careful at that point, if you went beyond my fake
reading saving innocent stuff, you could destroy your hidden things.

This was my world in the mid 80s on the computer scene. Acoustic coupler
dialing. [g]

My first real PC was a tandy 3000NL machine. Originally running dos v3.2 on
a 1.44meg high density floppy diskette; I had no hard drive at the time.
Later, a friend gave me his used 40meg seagate drive that was on an 8bit
controller card.

Before I got that hard drive tho, I ran a BBS from the floppy disk. :)
Spitfire v3.2. I couldn't host files or poll fidonet due to space, as the
machine booted off this floppy and ran the board from it, but I did have
active message boards and a couple of door games.

When I got the hard drive for it, I opened file bases for hpavc related
things. You had to know the secret password when you paged me if you wanted
your access upgraded to see the goods. [g]

I learned about compilers, pascal, assembler, visual basic, etc on that
machine.. You didn't have any of this neat stuff on the coco; your programs
remained in source code format and could be modified by others unless you
tokenized the hell out of it and wrote a custom loader where the rest of
the program code was data statements. Many games I'd take apart and crack
were programmed in that manner to keep people like me from doing what I
did. So I can't claim to have taught myself that trick, nope, I copied it.
lol.

I had my first zoom 2400 baud rs232 modem on that machine. Much later, I
upgraded it to a 14.4k external zoom, but I had to add an isa card for the
newer com port controller so I wouldn't lose data packets. The 14.4k and up
could send data faster than the 16450 UART could process it. The controller
card had the 16550 UART which corrected that.

I was working for Tandy Repair, the repair division of Radio Shack when
the TRS80 came out. It was funny how real geeks were snapping them up
for tons of cash. The first printer we saw for it was this strange thing
that spit out special aluminized paper from a semicircular slot with
tear off teeth to cut the paper. The print head zapped the aluminum on
the paper blackening it to produce characters. I liked to play with the
paper because it conducted electricity and was great for pranks where
the victim received a shock. Those early TRS80's would gronk if you
walked across a carpet and touched one of them. Computers were much more
fun back then especially when I was playing with mainframes back
in the mid 1960's. Working with computers back then was a mysterious
activity performed by geeks who spoke an arcane indecipherable language.
Computers aren't that fun anymore because everybody's got one or two or
three...... ^_^

1997 ? I thought it was much older. I probably wrote some of
the keygens, or at least, contributed to the source code. I left the
scene 14 years ago. Taking up too much of my time.

I felt sad about Fravia
http://fravia.2113.ch/

Also ORC - a search on his name put the NSA computers in
overdrive. They were both apparently poisoned. Conspiracy theory,
obviously.

I am thinking of a class action law-suit for copyright infringement for
ignoring x-no-archive requests... and refusing to remove old posts that
clearly state not to archive in the headers. Every once in a while their
system glitches, and they keep those posts. Plus the large amount of spam
coming from their "service" unchecked is an assult on the networks.

I think they are splitting hairs with the terminology there. On several
occasions when someone has asked about this, the article in question is
indeed not "archived" but is still available much later from one or
more cached pages. Try to locate the article in question "in the
archive" and you may see a 'not found' message or whatever - but you
can still access the article (sans header?) from their Usenet search.

I am not talking about cached pages, I mean I've seen it happen in real
time with my past posts and others. "This post will be removed in... x
minutes." Then x minutes later the notice is removed, yet the post
permanently remains archived on their thread. It's a glitch that Gigolo
does not care about.

Yes, but did you look in the *archive* or try to get header information
from the article that remains 'on their thread'? The times I have
checked, the "original source" would *normally* extract the archived
copy complete with headers; after the expired time the article's 'page'
on Google would not give you the "original source" when you selected it
from options - because they honored the do-not-archive request. It did
not remove copies that may exist 'outside' of the archive.

And yes, I believe that you are right in that they don't care. Aside
from that, I don't think that the NSA honors those requests either. ;)

How does one post from Google? And do they actually look for 2600, or do
they just stumble into it?

I'm having a problem with my NNTP service losing posts and the "techs"
I've talked to don't seem to know what Usenet is. The lords of Google

How does one post from Google?
Don't. They add returns after every line and track you when
you use the service.
Try (free) Aioe and a newsreader. Forte Agent is probably the
best.
Payware, but not as much as you've paid for hosting so far.

I've had my Texas.net account since some time in the 90s and Giganews
was/is supplied through that account. It has a very long retention and I
like having that texas.net in the path of my post header. I used some
free services when I first got DSL because Texas is a dial-up service,
but I learned how to set up TBird to login to their service with AT&T DSL.

I have a friend who runs an NNTP server from his home and I can read and
post to Usenet from his set-up. I am perfectly happy using Thunderbird
as a news reader. I use an older version as I like it better than the
later ones. I downloaded Mesnews a few days ago, but I don't like it.

Was that more than you needed to know? [g]

My friend who runs a server from his home is a hobbyist also, a serious
hobbyist ... many computers in his basement. I've never met him, but he
did post a photo one time of the collection. He used to run a BBS too
and he's also into radio ... or was. Every time his set-up goes down he
explains the entire process. I don't visit there as much as I used to,
but I did this week to ask questions in the private computer group.

I feel sad! Just (5 minutes ago) I attempted to see what's new @ FOSI because I haven't visited in so long. I've frequently visited/used the site since way back around 1998-ish. I'm not gonna cry about it but it sure did kill my buzz. Sad faces everywhere.

I remember FOSI used to have a trail of bubbles that followed your cursor around. lots of good memories.
What does it mean a new era begins? is there a substitute site?
I am a bit late on this, but does anybody know what happened to Fosi?

FastTrack, Gnutella, BitTorrent?

Hosting large files on webservers when your site is extremely popular
costs $$$. That why I'd NEVER click on a link on WatchSeries without an
adblocker, firewall, and anti-malware protection.

With FOSI you did not need any of that, though that's maybe why when the
bills stacked up, it was time to say farewell. FOSI's personal/hobby
server (that the files were hosted on in the later years) alphasys.nl
remains, but methinks the bandwidth could not keep up!

Someday TDD will return to follow-up to his thread that never died. ;)

Oh man ... well that totally sucks. I owe FOSI a great deal cause almost everything I know about using a computer I learned from experimenting with his/her programs since about 98. You could trust there would be no viruses, etc. there. I have no idea where to safely look for a few programs that we really could use right now but, as a non-profit, really can't buy :(
Would have loved to buy you a beer, FOSI :) Long life to you :)

Try http://alternativeto.net/
Lots of freeware replacements there.
There's always torrents. Carefully read the comments on the
page, if it's malware, someone will have cried wolf. Avoid anything
very new. A year old is usually OK.

Me and my Dufas brother are still around. The Dufas has been too tied up with other things to recover the account data from a file system crash on his main computer. The hard drive didn't break, the XP OS became so corrupted that the drive wouldn't boot. We both have dozens of desktops and laptops so we're still online we just haven't been cruising Usenet. I'm using my Chromebook to post this and Dufas has one too but no Google account which defaults to GG. I have time to post now because I'm in a nursing home/rehab center trying to get back on my feet. I'll probably have the physical terrorists get hold of me tomorrow to torture me by forcing my leg to bend, OUCH!!! It's frustrating to be disabled but at least the hospital and nursing home have WiFi. ^_^

wow.
It's been more than a decade since I've known FOSI.
I used to visit the site all the way up until 2012. I can't believe it
disappeared. Domain should never disappear for memroies.. . Thank you
for your service. I still have many programs backed up from FOSI in my
closet somewhere.
TDD may have split Usenet, yet this thread will always live on. ;)
Just noticed that. Last post was almost a year ago ..... after
a massive heart attack. Hope he's OK.

Frozen North kept in personal contact with his family (IIRC) when TDD first
split. Froz mentioned he was doing fine... just that he had to troubleshoot
his computer. A26 was dying down well before then anyway and TDD might have
took the opportunity to "retire".
Not quite family, but a friend of the family, not sure how many people
even remember TDD has a brother, Uncle Monster, he has been in hospital
recently too, got a few emails from him, TDD is fine, or I would have
heard otherwise.

It was good to read that TDD is doing OK. I've missed reading his posts,

group and kind of lost interest posting here, too.

I always liked chatting with psycho, too, because he's into storm

storms since we get a lot of that where I live.

I was finally able to get up in a walker for the first time in 2 months back on the 13th. I got up twice and hobbled about 10 feet, turned around and got back in the wheelchair the first time then back on the bed the second time. I'm exercising my legs by taking my wheelchair for a walk at least once a day. My shoulders are torn up along with my knees so I propel myself along in the wheelchair with my legs up and down the hallway a few times then get back in bed. I hope to be able to use a walker soon then graduate to my cane and eventually to freestyle walking.

Dufas mentioned a Texas group where he was locked in battle with The P.L.L.C.F.
(Progressive Liberal Leftist Commiecrat Freaks) who were infesting it and some other groups. He said he has a fanboy who is posting using part of his name while following him from group to group. P.L.L.C.F. and O.B.K. (Obama Butt Kissers) are all for free speech as long as it applies only to their speech. I tried to find the group but GG may not carry it. I could have some real fun with those mentally ill SOBs. I'm able to listen to streaming talk radio with my Chromebook and one of the shows is The Savage Nation with Dr. Michael Savage
who describes Liberalism as a mental disorder, something which I've found to be quite true.

Perhaps I'll be a good substitute since me and my bro used to tag team at aggravating The Mad Hatter, world famous super troll. If I get Dufas to open a Gmail account, he may start posting to Usenet again.

Here in Alabamastan, we've been having some wild storms lately which I've missed since I've been cooped up here in the nursing home/rehab center. The cable TV and Internet were out for quite a while today due to what I assume was caused by the stormy weather. o_O

WAZZZZZZ UP 'cho man?!!! Is there anyone left to terrify except Jenn? Me and Dufas have been absent from Usenet because it can take up a lot of time and I'm only able to get on now because I'm off my feet and unable to work. A lot of the old crew defected to Faceplant because of anuses like Hatter. I think Super Troll wound up homeless or something like that and was living in his car. The creep wound up being everyone's enema because he got up their ass. I forcibly expelled him which made it impossible for him to infiltrate my tailpipe and that frustrated him so much, I think he may have had a stroke. ^_^

Well, I'm not sure if you've caught up with the latest nincompoopery
(is that even a word?) going on the teh froup lately, but there's a
lot of ass hats that are in need of a good spanking (I already doled
one out to BD today - he needed a reminder of the last spank I gave
him about a year ago or so. *snicker*).

Frozzie and I can get you caught up on the minor leaguers when you
feel up to it. No sense in making your brain go all e'splody this
soon. lol

Glad to hear you're feeling well and in good spirits, good sir. It's
great to see you walking the hallowed halls of 2600 again. :)

(s)Hatter.. To be perfectly honest, no one has seen him on Usenet
since his last feud with Robert James about a year or two ago. And
AFAIK, he's no longer on Farcebook.

No one knows (or cares?) which Pizza Hut pan pizza box he's sleeping
under these days. He's probably somewhere wandering the streets of
Walla Walla giving hand jobs for a nickel. Or developing those oh so
killer websites of his in Flash for free sleep overs at the Lego
store. :D

In any event, I'm still kicking. But I'm more lurking than posting
these days. However, that's all about to change real soon. ;)

Would you be so kind as to send Dufus my regards? Let him know that
he's missed by us old timers? It would be greatly appreciated.

And again, it's great seeing you back again!

Does this rag smell funny to you? No, it smells heavenly.
"nincompoopery"? Heck, it's Usenet where words go to be born. It's also a great place to show what's under one's asshat so we other poasters(sic) can recoil in horror. I don't recall BD ever channelling Hatter so I must reserve judgement and you should always be careful who you spank because the spankee may like it, observe:

https://tinyurl.com/ozghfkx

I had a pressure relief valve installed in my skull to release high pressure brain farts so I doubt I'll suffer from any of the deleterious effects of information overload.

Being the good spirit that I am, (Casper The Friendly Ghost), I decided it was time I haunted Usenet again for my own amusement.

I remember RJ jousting with Hatter and as I remember Hatter was working for Wallyworld. Did RJ contact Wallyworld about Hatter and get him fired? If so,
let that be a lesson to all trolls who let it all hang out by letting the offended know exactly who and where they are. Heck, everyone knows that me and Dufas reside in Birmingham, Alabamastan but we're self employed so you can complain to our boss all you want.*snicker* Poor Hatter, how the mighty have fallen. ROTFLMAO

It's nice to know that your Karate lessons are coming along so well that you can lurk in the shadows(no pun) and pounce on any unsuspecting troll.

[Is Shadow still around?]

I'll let Brother Dufas know that you have the hots for him and that he has a fan club comprised of old people who are drooling for his return from the other dimension.

So you can see me?! Damn! I knew I should have put black tape over the camera on this Chromebook. ^_^

Hey, U. Monster... Since you have some time on your hands would you
be interested in joining me playing some games? I play chess at
chess.com, and word feud via my phone app a lot, and you can play

was recuperating and getting my strength back. Just thought I'd ask.
I know some people aren't into those games, but then again it never

Thanks for the invitation but I haven't played chess in a very long time. I suppose I could pose as a four year old and learn all over again? I'm just glad to have Chromie my Chromebook by my side to keep me from going completely bonkers. I can't just lay around and watch TV, my brain would necrotize and my body turn to stone. ^_^

Hey ... sorry to hear you're having health issues.
BDTD last fall, myself. Took nearly 3 months to get

It's good to be up and trying with the walker, I bet. I didn't think
I'd ever get my legs strong enough to go without it. I didn't have a
wheel chair at home so I had to depend on that walker for nearly 3
months. I would try and exercise my legs in bed when I could muster
up the strength, tho. I still have some muscle weakness, but at least
I can get around without the walker, now.

I know it's tough, trying to get those legs to cooperate...

Don't give up... It takes time to heal... Not how I know that! Soon
it'll just be a memory of what you overcame.

I remember Bama storms. Oklahoma storms are some whoppers, too. A

I'm sorry! I remember him mentioning Uncle
Monster and having a sister named Jenny off and
on. I am glad to finally meet you! (sort of! ha!)
Hey ... sorry to hear you're having health issues.
BDTD last fall, myself. Took nearly 3 months to get
to where I could walk w/o a walker again. Hope you
heal up quickly. :)
It was good to read that TDD is doing OK. I've
missed reading his posts, here. He was always
funny and saying something interesting here and
on that other group I read. When he stopped
posting I un-subbed that other group and kind of
lost interest posting here, too.
It's good to meet you too, surrogate sister. I've been in and out of the hospital and nursing homes since October of last year. The infection I had is gone but I still have to get walking again. The physical terrorists torture me from time to time but I'm doing a lot of my own exercises by taking my wheelchair for a walk at least once a day. I am getting stronger and in a lot less pain. I think the other group you're referring to had to do with Texas politics if I remember correctly.

I was finally able to get up in a walker for the first
time in 2 months back on the 13th. I got up twice
and hobbled about 10 feet, turned around and
got back in the wheelchair the first time then back on
the bed the second time. I'm exercising my legs by
taking my wheelchair for a walk at least once a day.
The most bizarre thing is that my calf muscles have shrunk so much that I can encircle them with the fingers of both hands. I used to be able to pick up a car engine, now I have trouble picking up Dogma and she only weighs 6 pounds.

My shoulders are torn up along with my knees so I
propel myself along in the wheelchair with my legs
up and down the hallway a few times then get back
in bed. I hope to be able to use a walker soon then
graduate to my cane and eventually to freestyle
walking.
Don't give up... It takes time to heal... Not how I know that! Soon
it'll just be a memory of what you overcame.
I'm moving a lot easier now than when I first got here at the end of February. The physical terrorists couldn't work with me because they could just touch my right knee with one finger and I would scream because of the pain.

My 25 yr old son broke his leg in a motor cycle accident a few years ago
and he went through a bone infection, crutches, and similar torture
trying to get his leg healed up. Some days he'd be so scared he was
going to lose his leg, and I'd have to encourage him. It's hard for a
mom to see their kids struggle like that. It's all a memory now,
though, and he's all healed up, and I know you'll get healed up, too.

I'm sorry you're having to go through this, but maybe it'll be something
that makes you stronger later on... That's what I always hope for, anyway!

I lost all my muscle tone and had no muscles at all in my legs.
Eventually, I was encouraged to drink something called Boost w/protein,

legs back and the muscle tone back. I like the chocolate version most.
Tried the vanilla one, and it was OK, but not my favorite.

[]'s
Frozen North kept in personal contact with his family (IIRC) when TDD first
split. Froz mentioned he was doing fine... just that he had to troubleshoot
his computer. A26 was dying down well before then anyway and TDD might have
took the opportunity to "retire".
Not quite family, but a friend of the family, not sure how many people
even remember TDD has a brother, Uncle Monster, he has been in hospital
recently too, got a few emails from him, TDD is fine, or I would have
heard otherwise.
[8~{} Uncle Monster
So sorry to hear of your current circumstances, U.Monster, but I'm
delighted to hear that TDD *is* actually alive (and reasonably well, I
hope). Please pass on my warm regards to him. I used to enjoy our
friendly banter.

Best he contacts me in 'alt.buzzard.rules' - a rather more friendly
place than this!

*I'm taking FN's advice and returning to Scorched-Earth*!

You are welcome there if ever you would care to join us. Most posters on

Have as great a day as you are able! :-)
